SHOW SEASON kicks-off today with the first of the New York
Fashion Week shows. Paving the way is Organic, Veronica Beard
and Rachel Comey, followed by Richard Chai, Creatures of the Wind,
Duckie Brown and Band Of Outsiders tomorrow. The Big Apple
traditionally always offers one the lengthiest line-ups, this
season spanning an impressive nine days.
Following denim label J Brand's Fashion
Week debut, Jason Wu is the
first of the major US heavyweights to take to the stage. Now
officially a fashion superpower, having been worn by Michelle Obama
at both presidential inaugurations, the designer will show on
Friday. NY mainstay and cult label Rag & Bone is up next,
before Helmut Lang that evening.
Fashion favourite Prabal Gurung
will begin the weekend proceedings - a designer who has cultivated
mass appeal over the past two years, garnering diverse star fans
from the Duchess of Cambridge to model Joan Smalls, who stars in
his latest campaign. All eyes will be on Alexander
Wang that afternoon, his first collection since being named
Balenciaga creative director. Will his eponymous collection reflect
a sign of things to come? We can't wait to see.
Victoria
Beckham will ensure that the fashion pack is up bright and
early on Sunday with her latest show, which is always a family
affair - with husband David and baby Harper usually gracing the
front row. Derek Lam, DKNY, Thakoon and Diane von Furstenberg will
steal the next slots, before Tommy Hilfiger and Zac Posen - a label
known for its dramatic floor-length gowns.
The Olsen twins will present their latest offering on Monday,
followed by Carolina Herrera, Donna Karan and then Marc Jacobs
that night - one of the schedule's most sought-after tickets.
Expect another collection that will influence at least one of the
season's most ubiquitous trends.
Tuesday's key shows come in the form of Victoria Victoria
Beckham (the designer's contemporary line), Rodarte (a brand adored
by all discerning members of the US fashion crowd), Jenny Packham
(where we should keep eyes peeled for next year's most popular red
carpet gowns), Marc by Marc Jacobs (always one of the wittiest and
most playful of the NY shows), and Sophie Theallet, who is
currently nominated for this year's prestigious International
Woolmark Prize. It is Oscar de la
Renta who will truly capture all attention though that evening,
following news that John
Galliano has been working with the legendary designer for the
past few weeks in a bid to revive his career since his Dior
dismissal in March 2011. Will the collection reflect any of
Galliano's much-revered drama and extravagant romance? Will he
attend the show himself? As Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman
said last month, it is a "magical match" and the results are sure
to be equally pleasing.
One of the city's best-loved designers, Michael Kors,
will hit the catwalk on Wednesday morning, as Rachel Zoe, Anna Sui
and Marchesa prepare for their latest fashion outings in the
afternoon. Proenza Schouler will pack a star-studded front
row that evening, was previous guests having included Kirsten
Dunst, Jessica Chastain and Kate Bosworth.
Then to Thursday February 14 for the final day of NY shows.
Last, but certainly not least, are two pillars of US style - Ralph Lauren
and Calvin
Klein - which brings us neatly to London Fashion Week the next
day.
